Full Itinerary

1. Departure from Moshi/ Aursha (approx. 8:00 AM)

Your guide collects you from your hotel in Moshi. The 45-minute drive to Materuni Village takes you up the mountain slopes, with views of the Kilimanjaro foothills opening up around you.

2. Forest hike & tropical farm walk (approx. 1.5 hrs)

The trail winds through shaded forest and smallholder farms, giving you close-up views of avocado, mango, banana, lemon, and arabica coffee trees growing together in the traditional Chagga agroforestry system known as the kihamba. Your guide explains local farming practices, plant uses, and the history of the Chagga people as you walk.

3. Materuni Waterfall & natural pool swim

Arriving at the base of the falls is a dramatic moment. The cascade plunges some 80 metres into a broad natural pool surrounded by moss-covered rocks and forest. You are welcome to swim and refresh yourself bring your swimsuit! Plenty of time is allocated here for photos and relaxation.

4. Chagga coffee farm demonstration

Back in the village, local farmers walk you through the entire coffee journey  from picking ripe red cherries on the bush to the hand-pulping, drying, hulling, roasting and brewing stages. This is not a commercial demonstration; these are working family farms, and the beans you see are destined for local cups and export. You will join in the grinding and roasting, and the air fills with the warm aroma of fresh Tanzanian arabica.

5. Traditional Chagga lunch & coffee tasting

The day closes with a sit-down lunch prepared by village women using local ingredients, a flavourful spread of dishes traditional to the Chagga community. The meal is accompanied by a cup of the coffee you helped prepare, often enjoyed to the sound of traditional song. It is a warm, communal ending to a full day in the village.

Why Materuni is Special

Unlike many attractions near Kilimanjaro, Materuni remains a living, working community. The coffee farms are family-owned and have been cultivated for generations. Tourism here is community-led, which means that the money you spend directly supports the families and cooperative that host you — from the guide who walks you to the waterfall, to the women who cook your lunch.

The waterfall itself is among the most impressive in the Kilimanjaro region: accessible enough for a day hike, yet remote enough to feel like a discovery. The combination of natural scenery, cultural immersion, and excellent food makes this one of the most consistently praised day tours in northern Tanzania.

For climbers, the moderate 1.5-hour trail serves as an excellent altitude acclimatisation warm-up before a Kilimanjaro ascent, or a gentle recovery walk after coming down from the summit.
