The Great Wildebeest Migration – Witness Africa's Most Spectacular Wildlife Event

Every year, over two million wildebeest, zebras, and gazelles embark on one of nature’s most breathtaking journeys, a relentless, life-or-death cycle driven by rain, instinct, and survival. This is the Great Wildebeest Migration, and Tanzania’s Serengeti ecosystem is where it all unfolds.

What Makes the Migration So Extraordinary?

There is nothing rehearsed about this. No ticket, no script — just raw nature playing out on a scale most people never imagined they’d witness in their lifetime.

The journey moves through four distinct phases, each offering a completely different experience:

  • December – March | Ndutu Calving Season (Southern Serengeti) The southern plains of Ndutu come alive with new life. Thousands of wildebeest calves are born within weeks of each other — a survival strategy that overwhelms predators. Lions, cheetahs, and hyenas are never far behind, making this one of the most action-packed wildlife experiences in Africa.
  • April – May | The Great Trek Begins (Central Serengeti) As the rains shift, so do the herds. Massive columns of wildebeest begin pushing north, stretching across the plains as far as the eye can see. It’s humbling, almost spiritual.
  • June – October | The Mara River Crossings (Northern Serengeti) This is the moment safari dreams are made of. Hundreds of thousands of wildebeest reach the Mara River — and they hesitate. They pace the banks for hours, sometimes days, before the chaos erupts. Then, in an instant, they plunge in. Crocodiles surge. The water turns. Some make it. Some don’t. It’s terrifying, beautiful, and unforgettable.
  • November | The Return South With the short rains returning, the herds loop back south — and the cycle begins again.
